This past weekend, Drew and I had a real estate class in D.C. We managed to mix business with pleasure while we were there. We deliberately flew in early on Thursday so we could visit with friends and do some "touristy" things. As soon as we landed, we took the metro over to Ballston in Arlington to get to the hotel. FYI, that was my first experience EVER on a metro/subway system. I'm quite a fan. Anyway, I told you in the Auburn post that my friend Heather would be in DC during our trip. She and her sister and her niece met us at the hotel to hang out for a while. That was the first time I got to meet little Miss Kenna. She is precious! Heather's sister was VERY pregnant...as in due on Saturday. (I'm happy to announce that her sweet baby boy was born Sunday night at 11:45pm!)

After the girls left, Drew and I walked to find some lunch. We spotted a thai place, Bangkok Bistro. It was fabulous! I couldn't decide what to get so the Kantuk platter was perfect for me. I had a little sample of everything. YUM-O!
After lunch, we hit the metro again. This time our goal: CUPCAKES! You know me...I have to try them all and see who has the best of the best. We got of the Metro at the Rosslyn station and walked across the Francis Scott Key Bridge into Georgetown. (I LOVE Georgetown!) We took a right on M Street and headed straight for Georgetown Cupcake. We had been warned that we might have to wait in a really long line. I was prepared. Apparently, 3 pm on a Thursday afternoon is the perfect time because there was no line. There were a couple of people in there and 4 or 5 people came in after us, but we lucked out!

There were so many choices, we had a really hard time picking these 6: Chocolate squared, key lime, pumpkin spice, chocolate birthday cake, chocolate peanut butter, and caramel apple. YUM! You can check out their website and read about all their fabulous flavors. Disclaimer: I did NOT eat all of these by any means. I got my fork and took ONE BITE of each. My favorite: pumpkin spice with maple cream cheese frosting.

We continued our walk and found Sprinkles two blocks down. I was so excited that I forgot to take a picture of theirs. We got pumpkin spice, salted caramel, vanilla, and mocha. Then we heard the guy that worked there talking about how they're famous for red velvet, so I had to buy one of those too...and a chocolate marshmallow one. (Again, only eating one bite) As we continued our journey through Georgetown, we made a final cupcake stop at Baked & Wired. We had their "cakecups." They make their own wrappers out of parchment paper, so you get a lot more cupcake. We got the dirty chai latte, the Elvis, the Flapjack, Karen's Birthday, pumpkin spice, and the Texas Sheetcake.** (definitely my favorite!) It was a glorious day of cupcake shopping! I'll be posting full reviews on all the cupcakes on Sissy's Sweets blog. We finally made it to the Foggy Bottom metro station and rode back to the hotel. Here's our big score for the day:

I was running on 2 hours of sleep from the night before, so I crashed at about 5:30, waking up at 9 pm STARVING to death. We ordered room service and went right back to bed. We had to be up and at 'em the next morning for day one of our class. For lunch the next day we had an awesome lunch at Ted's Montana Grill, where we both enjoyed a bison dish. That night we were meeting our friends for dinner. I had been looking forward to this night for a really long time....like a year and a half long time. Because that's how long it has been since we've seen these guys! Nick and Kim and Ben and Becca were stationed in Hawaii with us. I'm sure you remember them. :) They picked us up at the hotel and we went to Ray's the Steak to eat a lot of cow!
The boys.
And the girls
again at the end of the evening. Becca is pregnant with a little girl too...due at the same time as me!
Saying goodbye is never fun.
I'm SO glad we got to spend some time with our dearest friends. I miss them so much! I wish we had more time so I could have seen the kids, but we'll save that for next time. Friday night was definitely my favorite of the weekend!
Saturday was a good day of class. We learned a lot about Property Management. We had a working lunch with some others in our class at a place called the Green Turtle. We knew some people in our class from our last conference in Orlando. It was nice to see some familiar faces. Saturday night we had a date night at the theater and closed out the Twilight Saga. It was really well done!
Sunday, we had class until 4. Then we headed back to the airport to fly home.
We had a great trip! Not only did we learn a lot about our business, we got to see some very good friends of ours. I missed a couple of our friends due to sickness and a really busy schedule, so we'll have to come back sometime! I wish we had more time so we could've gone to the mall area and visited some of the monuments. The last time I was in DC? Spring of 1998 with the Aggie Band, marching in the cherry blossom parade! Needless to say, it had been a while!
