Dad, Andrew, and I went "loafin'" last Monday to visit a very special lady. Her name is Mrs. Millican. She lives in Blountsville, AL and she is 100 years old! (On April 25th, she'll be 101!) Oh, what a life she has lived! She has some stories, that's for sure. Her health is about what you'd expect for someone who has been around for 100 years, but her mind is as sharp as ever. Up until last year sometime, she wrote a column in the newspaper called, "Can You Top This." Her writing is what prompted our meeting. She has a book (actually 2) but this one is called "Snake Stories II and Racoon Wranglers: Two Books In One." It's exactly what it sounds like; a collection of stories about snakes and racoons. On page 15, you'll read a story about my Great-Great Grandmother, Cecilia. She was bitten on the head by a copperhead. And immediately following, on page 17, is a story that my Dad told her about the time the snake got in the flying squirrel cage. She even put a picture of her and Dad at her 98th birthday party.
Dad had told me a lot about her and he really wanted us to get to meet her. I'm glad we did. She's a remarkable lady. (A little back story: She worked at the school with my Great-Grandparents and they were good friends.) Once, my great grandparents took my great-great grandmother, Cecilia, to her house...that's when she got the snake story from her. We counted and Andrew made SIX generations of my family that Mrs. Millican got to meet. Isn't that amazing? So here's what 100 years looks like:
After our visit with Mrs. Millican, we took the scenic route home. Dad drove us by an old graveyard situated between some chicken houses and a farm house. He pointed out this grave:
